WashU IT’s Apprenticeship Program is addressing St. Louis’ dual challenge: supporting non-traditional candidates and fulfilling unmet IT positions, as well as embracing our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The program, which began with its’ first cohort of 5 apprentices in March of 2022, was started by a partnership between AT&T and WashU IT. The 18-month program included 3-month rotations in Enterprise Applications, WUSM ITSS, PPMO/SMO, Data Management, InfoSec, and Shared Infrastructure. With the overall success of the program, and the hiring of three of the five apprentices in WashU IT, Russell Sharp approved funding for an additional cohort.
Cohort 2, which began in February 2024, consists of three, 6-month rotational placements within WashU IT, tailored to the apprentice’s interests and departmental needs. The apprentices, Aimal Salihi, Wahid Mahmodi, and Jermaine Buckels applied for and were selected for the program based on their prior experiences, skills, and knowledge. During the program, each apprentice is receiving training and mentorship in an entry-level position in WashU IT. The aim is to equip the apprentices with necessary skills and experience to help them obtain full-time employment which will uplift them economically and secure family-supporting wages.
Feedback from stakeholders ensures program effectiveness and participant success. In investing in diverse talent like Aimal Salihi, Wahid Mahmodi, and Jermaine Buckels, WashU fosters a more inclusive community and drives sustainable growth in St. Louis.
