Network Modernization Project: May 2025 Update

The Network Modernization Project is improving connectivity across all university campuses in 2025. Launched in November 2024, this initiative aims to replace outdated network equipment with cutting-edge technology to meet the institution’s evolving digital needs. The project features a tenfold increase in bandwidth to improve network performance, enhance security through segmentation, and simplify network management and operations. These advancements will provide faster, more reliable connections benefiting students, faculty, and staff throughout the university community.

Washington University depends on an always-on network for uninterrupted learning across its campuses. By using advanced network solutions, the university can create a flexible and secure network that meets various needs and reduces the risk of cyber-attacks. Additionally, the wired network infrastructure is built to perform well now and, in the future, allowing for upgrades without replacing existing hardware.

In December 2024, WashU IT’s Network Modernization team successfully completed the upgrade of the Research Infrastructure Services (RIS) Firewall. This enhancement has significantly improved the reliability and performance of the network infrastructure at WashU.

Since the last update in March 2025, progress has been achieved with numerous buildings on WashU campuses integrating into the new network environment. On the Danforth Campus, Crow Hall, Women’s Building, Cupples Hall I, Cupples Hall II, Compton Hall, Ridgley Hall, and Eads Hall have all joined the network. Additionally, on the WashU Medicine campus, the Cortex Building, Shriners Hospital for Children, St. Louis Hospital for Children, and the Cancer Research Building have also been onboarded.

Looking ahead, the project will focus on the Danforth Campus and student residence halls throughout Summer 2025.
