Email Client Setup: Other Mail Clients

POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP Clients

For the best experience, Washington University IT recommends using the Microsoft Outlook client for Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, and Web.

WashU IT will provide support for POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP clients connecting to the Microsoft 365 (M365) service on a best effort basis. Support does include troubleshooting and resolving any client authentication and connection issues to the M365 service.

For assistance with reconfiguring Thunderbird to use Modern Authentication, please refer to this ServiceNow Knowledge Base article

NOTE: Email clients using the POP3, IMAP4, and direct SMTP protocols are generally not permitted to connect to Washington University’s Microsoft 365 system.

Security Exceptions

For specific needs, security connection requests for POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP can be made through the Office of Information Security.
