Each year, billions of birds cross through the United States on their seasonal migrations. An estimated 600,000 birds die after colliding with buildings. Lights Out Heartland, a collaboration of organizations from the heartland area of the US, is asking individuals and organizations to dim or turn off non-essential outdoor lights and close blinds this May to prevent night time light pollution for migrating birds. Signing on to the Lights Out Heartland initiative, WashU is committed to helping promote this effort. The university’s Office of Sustainability is leading the charge.
