GitHub is the world’s leading platform for hosting and managing code projects. WashU IT grants its community access to GitHub Enterprise. With GitHub, developers can efficiently track revisions, collaborate on code, oversee tasks, and contribute to open-source initiatives.
Washington University offers two GitHub environments to support projects:
GitHub EMU (Enterprise Managed Users)
GitHub EMU (Enterprise Managed Users) is an enterprise-managed instance, administered directly by WashU through our provider. Collaboration is limited to within the enterprise, and only internal and private repositories are allowed. Accounts are provisioned by the university and accessed with WashU Key credentials. For most non-academic purposes, this is the recommended option.
GitHub Education
This instance enables open-source collaboration. Both public and private repositories are supported, and interaction with other GitHub users is permitted, subject to policy. Access is through a personal account via SAML Single Sign-on, with front-door access only. Access to organizations and repositories is managed within GitHub. Please share details about your use case so we can help determine if this is the right option for you.
Important Note: GitHub is not approved for confidential, HIPAA, or protected information.
WashU clients can request GitHub access through ServiceNow. New organizations are provisioned and managed with WashU Key authentication. WashU IT offers training resources to help users get started and develop their skills.
