WashU IT Communications Specialist Annabelle Yu was honored recently for her important volunteer advocacy work with the local nonprofit organization St. Louis Survivor Legal Support (SLSLS).
SLSLS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those experiencing intimate or domestic violence by providing free legal services and support. Yu began volunteering with SLSLS in February of this year after reaching out to a mentor about potential volunteer opportunities. She was one of three individuals honored in October with an inaugural Jim Holloran Legacy of Advocacy Award, named in memory of attorney Jim Holloran, a long-time supporter of the organization who passed away earlier this year. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate outstanding commitment to advancing justice and empowering survivors.
“I was introduced to SLSLS by my undergraduate professor, Jami Ake, while looking for local, community-based volunteering opportunities,” Yu shared. “Having volunteered consistently in the gender-based violence field throughout undergrad, I felt that SLSLS was perfect.”
According to the organization’s newsletter, “Annabelle volunteers her time to manage SLSLS’ digital presence, from maintaining our website to supporting our social media outreach. Her expertise ensures that survivors can find us quickly and that our message reaches a wider audience.”
In her role with SLSLS, Yu has significantly contributed by applying her skills in content management systems and her basic knowledge of web technologies like HTML and CSS. Besides maintaining and enhancing the organization’s digital presence, she attends court trainings, assists with client intake and helps file Orders of Protection.
These responsibilities often require her to use vacation days and work after hours and on weekends.
Yu’s commitment extends beyond her current tasks. She hopes to further her role within SLSLS by training to become a court companion, providing emotional support to survivors as they navigate the legal system.
“Over the past few months, I have been inspired by the dedication of the SLSLS team and grateful for the chance to serve a cause I truly believe in, a value my dad often reminded me of when he said, ‘If practice makes perfect, then practicing excuses will only perfect your selfishness. Use your time to help in the causes you believe in,'” Yu said.
“While there is always more to do,” she shared, “I am really grateful for this recognition and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.”
Yu graduated with a major in Cognitive Neuroscience and a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. During her undergraduate studies, Yu was part of the DevSTAC program, contributing to digital content for the IT ImpacT Strategic Plan.
After graduating in 2023, she transitioned into a full-time role with WashU IT’s Tech Den team, focusing on cutting-edge 3D technologies and software engineering projects.
“I’ve had the privilege of knowing Annabelle for several years — first as a WashU undergraduate student, and now as a valued member of our Tech Den team,” said Oana Dimofte, Manager of Tech Den. “This recognition highlights not only Annabelle’s remarkable skill, but also the heart, quiet strength, and compassion she brings to every endeavor. The same creativity she contributes to our projects at WashU IT fuels her volunteer work helping survivors of intimate-partner violence gain access to vital legal support.”
Founded by former judge Michael D. Burton, who also established the Domestic Violence Court in St. Louis County, SLSLS partners with attorneys to provide free legal services, including representation for those seeking orders of protection. This ensures that survivors can access justice and protection when they need it most.
