Microsoft has announced the release of GPT-5 in Microsoft 365 Copilot, reinforcing its commitment to delivering OpenAI’s latest models to customers within 30 days of launch. This integration brings significant advancements in AI-powered productivity, offering users a more intelligent and responsive experience across their daily workflows.

GPT-5 introduces a dynamic model-routing capability within Copilot. When a user submits a prompt, Copilot can now determine the nature of the request and select the most appropriate model to generate a response. For routine or straightforward queries, Copilot prioritizes speed and efficiency, using GPT-5’s high-throughput model to deliver quick, concise answers. For more complex or open-ended questions, Copilot engages GPT-5’s deeper reasoning model, which takes time to plan, gather relevant context, and validate its response before providing a comprehensive answer.
Starting Thursday, August 7th, users with Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses can access GPT-5 directly within Copilot Chat via a new “Try GPT-5” button. Once activated, GPT-5 will be used for that session, enabling Copilot to reason over both web and work data—including emails, calendars, chats, documents, meetings, and contacts. These licensed users will benefit from priority access, ensuring consistent performance and high-quality responses.
For users without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, GPT-5 is beginning to roll out today, with general availability expected in the coming weeks. These users will receive standard access, without integration into organizational data.
Copilot with GPT-5 is designed to meet the needs of modern enterprises, offering AI capabilities that are tuned for work and tailored to business requirements. It is backed by Microsoft’s enterprise-grade security, compliance, and privacy standards, ensuring that organizations can adopt these innovations with confidence.
