Update to “Reimage, Reuse, Remove Computer from WashU” process

Important guidance on workstation disposal

Challenged to maintain security of data throughout its lifecycle, WashU employees must comply with HIPAA and other regulations. WashU IT has the resources to help.

Proper disposal prevents data breaches, mitigates the potential for associated fines, helps protect institutional reputation and maintain trust.

While secure disposal is essential for all WashU assets, this specific function is not required for all devices. If the asset meets any of the criteria below, please follow the Workstation Decommissioning and Secure Data Sanitization process:

  • Workstations have handled PHI.
  • The person using the device is leaving university and taking the laptop off campus for personal use.
  • The workstation is being reassigned.
  • The workstation will be donated.

If the criteria applies, please complete the ServiceNow Request Form for “Reimage, Reuse, Remove Computer from WashU.” After the form is submitted, customers will work with an IT technician on the next steps in the device disposal process.
