STS Reclaims Trophy back from WUPD by Winning Summer BBQ Contest

Submitted by Oana Jackson

The second annual STS/WUPD summer BBQ took place Friday, July 30, on the walkway to the Danforth Campus right outside STS. A team of 9 judges led by Anna Gonzales, vice-chancellor for student affairs, voted 6:3 in favor of STS to win this summer’s contest.  STS staff members Sherry Holmes, Oana Jackson, Peeti Sithyopasakul and Laura Barnes were joined by EUS colleagues Rick Herman, Jennifer Zayed and David Leisure in putting together an international-flavored menu that claimed the #1 spot.

WashU IT colleagues and various campus partners were invited to attend the event in an effort to safely bring the community back together before the start of a new academic year.

“This is the first official WashU event I have been invited to and I am delighted to be a judge, thank you very much for the honor” said VC Anna Gonzales, who attended along with her family and their two dogs.

When asked about winning the competition, Sherry Holmes said, “This years’ theme menu titled ‘Welcome Back to the WURLD’ highlighted grilled delicacies from all over the globe. Our menu was inclusive, eclectic and showcased the diverse backgrounds and talents both teams possess. Fun names such as Umami Mami Brisket and Super Soul Food Salad (grilled romaine with seasonal BBQ’d veggies) helped STS lock and load this years’ win. Tireless efforts resulted with us securing the coveted 3D-printed Summer WUSTL Kickball Champions of the South 40 (and all the surrounding known universe) trophy back from the wall of blue also known as WUPD! Looking forward to 2022!”
