A security key in IT is a cryptographic tool used for encryption, decryption, authentication, and digital signatures to secure data and communications. It can be software-based or a physical device, such as a USB key, often used in multi-factor authentication to enhance cybersecurity by verifying user identity and protecting sensitive information.
What is a Security Key?
A security key refers to a cryptographic key that is used in various encryption and authentication processes to secure digital communications and data. Security keys can serve different functions, such as:
- Encryption and Decryption: Security keys are used to encode (encrypt) data, rendering it unreadable to unauthorized users and to decode (decrypt) it when necessary.
- Authentication: Security keys can verify the identity of users or systems and often replace traditional password authentication methods.
At WashU, we utilize both physical and virtual security keys to authenticate more securely and improve user experience.
