Project Summary

WashU IT, Information Security, and WUSM ITSS have collaborated to introduce a new registration process for devices connecting to the wired network. This change will further protect patient, student, research, and academic data from bad actors by stopping non-registered devices from accessing the wired network.

Project Scope

Beginning in early 2024 and running till the summer of 2025 we will implement the new device registration process location by location on the WUSM campus. This measured pace will help minimize impact and ensure a smooth transition for each impacted location.

After a location is secured all devices new to the wired network will need to be registered.

Danforth Campus is not in-scope for this phase of the project.

How can this impact me?

  • All devices connected to the wired network before a location is secured will remain connected.
  • Once a location’s wired network has been secured, any devices new to the WashU wired network must be registered to connect. Registration instructions are in the next section.
  • Devices obtained from the WashU IT depot are automatically registered.

How do I register devices NOT obtained from the WashU IT Depot?

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “WashU Wired Network” mean?

Devices connected to the WashU Wired Network via green network cables.

Please see the What devices are in scope for this change? section for examples.

What devices are in scope for this change?
  • On-campus devices connected to the WashU wired network, typically with a green network cable, located in one of the areas listed below:
    • WashU Medical campus
    • WUCA clinics
    • WashU off-site locations
  • All devices currently connected to the wired network will not be affected.
  • Devices connected to the wired network after go live must be registered.
    • Devices obtained from the WashU IT Depot are automatically registered.

How are devices registered
  • All Computers and Devices obtained from the WashU IT Depot are automatically registered for the WashU Wired Network.
  • Please contact the Service Desk to register computers and devices not obtained from the WashU IT depot.
  • Want to register a device yourself?
Has my area been updated with the new device registration process?

Please visit the location list to see which areas have implemented the new device registration process.

Notes

  • The location list is stored in box and required WUSTL Key login.
  • Future dates associated with locations are tentative.

This project only impacts the WashU Medical Campus, WUCA clinics, and WashU off-site locations.

How will I know when my area will be updated?
  • All individuals, and their immediate supervisors (per workday), will be notified several days in advance.
  • On the day of the change IT staff will be on-site to provide support.
Does device registration expire?

Once a device is registered it will remain registered provided it is active on the WashU Wired Network.

If the device is not active on the WashU Wired Network for one (1) year or longer then the registration will expire and it must be re-registered.

Can I move a device?

Yes, you can remove the network cable from a device, move it, and plug it back into the WashU Wired Network. This will not impact the device’s registration.
