What is Skype for Business (formerly Lync)?

  • Skype for Business (formerly Lync) is Microsoft’s unified communication tool for Instant Messaging, Web/Video Conferencing, and Presence information.
  • Note that throughout the middle of 2015, Microsoft will be gradually transitioning all “Lync” branded products over to “Skype for Business”, so you maysee boths depending on what operating system and client version you are using. Who can use Skype for Business?

  • Skype for Business service is enabled for all faculty, staff, and students who have been migrated to the Office 365 service.

 

How do I download and install the Skype for Business Client?

  • Follow the instructions here
  • If you do not have rights to install software on your office computer, contact support for assistance installing Skype for Business

 

I manually set my presence as available, and now it is not showing that I am in a meeting. How do I correct this?

  • Open Skype for Business, click My Status, then click Reset Status.

 

How many people can attend a meeting that I set up in Skype for Business?

  • Up to 250 people can participate in a Skype for Business meeting at one time.

 

When I am in a meeting with multiple people, can I view more than one video feed at a time?

  • By default Skype for Business will display the video feed of the person who is currently speaking and a small preview of your own video feed (if you aresharing your video). You cannot view the video feeds of additional participants.

 

How do I get rid of the Out of Office reply in Skype for Business?

  • If you have an out of office reply set on your Office 365 email, it will also be displayed in Skype for Business. To turn it off:
    • Sign into Office 365 using your WUSTL Key at email.wustl.edu/mail
    • Click on the small Gear icon near the top-right and select Automatic replies
    • Click the Don’t sent automatic replies button and then click Save
  • Note: The Out of Office reply can take up to thirty minutes to disappear from the Skype for Business display after it has been turnedoff in Outlook.

 

Can I create a custom presence status?

  • The presence states in Skype for Business are pre-set and cannot be modified. You can write a personal note at the top of the Skype for Business mainwindow to provide details about where you are and what you’re doing.
  • Click the note display area, and then type over the note that is currently displayed.

 

I am sharing a PowerPoint presentation in Skype for Business but it won’t let me edit the slides. How do I correct this?

  • When you click the Share menu and select PowerPoint Presentation, Skype for Business allows you to show but not editthe presentation. To edit a PowerPoint presentation while you are sharing it, click Share, select Program, and then select thePowerPoint program. Open your presentation in PowerPoint and you will be able to edit it.

 

I don’t have a webcam. Can I still view video that is shared by other meeting participants?

  • Although you don’t have a webcam, you can still view other participants’ video feeds.

 

Does Microsoft provide a list of Skype for Business compatible devices?

 

Can I disable Skype for Business from automatically starting up?

  • Yes. Simply follow these instructions:
  • With Skype for Business open, click the Gear Icon on the right-hand side to automatically open the Options dialog box or click andselect Tools then Options
  • Click Personal from the left-hand panel.
    Note: The Microsoft Lync Options dialog box for Personal displays on the right-hand side.
  • Deselect Automatically start Skype for Business when I log on to Windowsand Show Skype for Business in foreground when it startsunder the My account section
  • Click OK
    Note: Under the section titled Personal information manager, you have the option to make changes to your presence status (which by

default is based on your Outlook calendar) and how you want to save your message conversations. Make any desired changes and click OK.

 

How do I start a conference call with multiple contacts?

  • In the Skype for Business main window, in your Contacts list, hold down the Ctrl key, and then click the contacts that you want to call
  • Right-click any one of the selected contacts, point to Start a Conference Call, and then click Skype for Business Call

 

How do I add an internal contact to my Contacts list?

  • In the Skype for Business main window, click the Add a Contact button.
  • From the dropdown menu, click Add a Contact in my Organization.
  • In the search box, type the person’s, email alias, or phone number. As you type, a list of people who match the search terms is displayed.
  • Scroll through the search returns list until you come to the person you want to add to your Contacts list.
  • Right-click the person’s search listing, and then click Add to Contacts List.
  • Select a group from the list to add your new contact to.

 

How do I add a contact from outside of my company to my Contacts list?

  • In the Skype for Business main window, click the Add a Contact button.
  • From the dropdown menu, click Add a Contact Not in my Organization.
  • On the second drop-down menu, click the Instant Messaging service (Lync, AOL, MSN, Yahoo) your new contact will be using, if you know it. Otherwise clickOther.
  • In the search field of the Add [service type] Contact, type the email address of the contact.
  • Select a group and a privacy relationship for your new contact, then click OK.

 

How do I block contacts from reaching me via Skype for Business?

  • Although your and email address are displayed to blocked contacts, they can’t reach you through Skype for Business.
  • To block a contact in Skype for Business: Right-click on the contact you want to block, click Change Privacy Relationship, and then click Blocked Contacts.

 

How do I delete contacts from my Contacts list?

  • Right-click the contact you want to delete, and then click Remove from Contacts List.

 

How do I create a group of contacts?

  • In the Lync main window, on your Contacts list, right-click any group (for example, Other Contacts), then click Create New Group. Or click the Add aContact button, and then click Create a New Group.
  • In the space that now opens up at bottom of the window, type over the phrase New Group to give your group a descriptive.

 

Can I use Lync with Linux?

  • Lync does not support the Linux operating system. However, by installing Moonlight (an open source implementation of Microsoft Silverlight), you can useLync Web App to join Lync meetings that have been created by others.
