Microsoft security updates that are classified as Critical will be deployed to a test group the evening it becomes available and approved.
  • 2nd Tuesday of the Month (Patch Tuesday): Patches are available for installation at approximately 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. for members of the Software Update Test Group.
  • Thursday – 2 days later:
Patches are installed on members of the Software Update Test Group between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m.
Production Group Full deployment of Critical updates will occur within 72 hours following the test group.
  • 3rd Tuesday of the Month:
Patches are made available via Software Center (OS and Software Update Collections) between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m.
  • 4th Tuesday of the Month:
Patches are installed on all computers which have not already installed the update between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m.
Notes The installation of Critical updates may or may not require a reboot You can initiate updates any time between the 3rd and 4th Tuesday of the month by opening Software Center and navigating to the Updates section.

You can select the update you would like to install or use Install All button in the top right corner (recommended).

NOTE: It is highly recommended that every department have several computers in the test group. This allows each department (and workflow within each department) to test the updates prior to all machines having the updates installed. If there are problems identified, the patch causing the issue can be pulled prior to enterprise deployment.  If you would like to become part of the test group please contact the Service Center at 314-933-3333 or ithelp@wustl.edu and ask to have your computer enrolled.

Pro Tip: Configure Your Business Hours

Why to Configure Business Hours How to Configure Business Hours
This allows you to control when updates are installed on your computer and be more proactive with the update process as required updates will not wait until the deadline is reached to automatically install.  They will install outside your business hours when available.
  1. Navigate to Software Center
  2. Select Work Information
  3. Under the Computer maintenance section:
  4. Select Automatically install or uninstall required software and restart the computer only outside of the specified business hours under the Computer maintenance section.

Note: While all updates do not require your computer to restart it is best practice to anticipate that a restart will occur and save all in progress work prior to an update implementation.
