As part of the Washington University commitment to ensure the security of computer devices the following process is utilized to distribute Windows OS updates.
Update Types and Process
|Critical Updates||Standard Updates|
|Microsoft security updates that are classified as Critical will be deployed to a test group the evening it becomes available and approved.||
|Production Group||Full deployment of Critical updates will occur within 72 hours following the test group.||
|Notes||The installation of Critical updates may or may not require a reboot||You can initiate updates any time between the 3rd and 4th Tuesday of the month by opening Software Center and navigating to the Updates section.
You can select the update you would like to install or use Install All button in the top right corner (recommended).
|NOTE: It is highly recommended that every department have several computers in the test group. This allows each department (and workflow within each department) to test the updates prior to all machines having the updates installed. If there are problems identified, the patch causing the issue can be pulled prior to enterprise deployment. If you would like to become part of the test group please contact the Service Center at 314-933-3333 or firstname.lastname@example.org and ask to have your computer enrolled.|
Pro Tip: Configure Your Business Hours
|Why to Configure Business Hours||How to Configure Business Hours|
|This allows you to control when updates are installed on your computer and be more proactive with the update process as required updates will not wait until the deadline is reached to automatically install. They will install outside your business hours when available.||
Note: While all updates do not require your computer to restart it is best practice to anticipate that a restart will occur and save all in progress work prior to an update implementation.
