SCAM ALERT: Phishing Phone Call Attempts Around Campus

The Washington University Information Security Office has recently received several reports of phishing phone call attempts. In these incidents, an attacker has called WashU faculty and staff noting a potential virus or threat. The caller then requests information about the person’s computer or printer. Callers have identified themselves as technology specialists with Dell, Microsoft and Apple.

If you receive a phone call where you’re asked for information about your computer, printer or network, ask the caller for their name, department, company and a call back number. In many cases, the caller will hang up. You can also transfer the call to your IT Help Desk. Whether you received a call and dismissed it or responded to a call and provided information, please report the incident to the Information Security Office at infosec@wustl.edu.
